Modern CCTV for patients, visitors and staff
Introduction
Dacha SSI replaced ageing CCTV across an NHS healthcare estate so security teams could see the site clearly, respond faster, and pass recordings to the police that they can actually use.
The challenge
A hospital is not a locked building. Patients, families, staff and contractors move through it around the clock. When cameras are old, grainy or hard to search, teams are left working in the dark after an incident — and people on the ward feel it.
The estate needed a modern CCTV platform that would help staff manage the site, deter and detect crime, and support a proper response when something went wrong.
About the site
This was a typical NHS healthcare environment: public front of house, clinical areas, and a mix of 24-hour activity. We are publishing it as an anonymised case study. No Trust, hospital or town is identified.
Like many healthcare estates, the priority was not cameras for their own sake. It was whether security and clinical teams could see what mattered — and act — without turning the hospital into a fortress.
The solution
A like-for-like swap of end-of-life cameras would have left the same gaps in a newer box. Dacha designed a CCTV refresh around how a hospital actually uses video: clearer images, reliable recording, and a way for authorised staff to find an event and export it for police, safeguarding or internal review.
Coverage was planned around public and staff safety — entrances, circulation and the places where an incident needs to be seen quickly — so operators have a live picture of the estate rather than a pile of unsearchable footage.
What the new CCTV is there to do
The system was specified so the healthcare team could:
- Give patients, visitors and staff more confidence that the site is being looked after
- See and manage activity across the buildings in real time
- Deter and detect crime, and hand police a recording they can use
- Alert police or other emergency services sooner when something is wrong
- Review footage if someone has left a ward without permission or cannot be found
- Spot people who should not be on site before they reach a restricted area
None of that requires naming the Trust. It is the same job on any busy NHS estate: see clearly, act quickly, and keep the evidence.
