A school at 3.30pm is one building. The same site at 8pm is another: sports hire, cleaners, governors, a contractor on a boiler, and a side gate that someone wedged for a delivery that never came. After-hours access on education sites fails when those groups share one set of keys and nobody can say who is still inside.
Safeguarding, insurance and basic theft all sit on that problem. You do not solve it with a camera on the hall. You solve it by deciding which doors work after hours, for whom, and who gets an alert when the wrong one opens.
Separate the people who should still be there
Staff, lettings, and contractors are not the same credential. A caretaker who is on site until 7pm should not still open the science block at midnight. A football hire should open the changing rooms and pitch gate, not the classrooms. A roofing contractor should not inherit last year’s master fob.
Access control that can time-limit and revoke those groups is the baseline. Paper keys and a shared alarm code cannot. When a member of staff leaves, the credential should die that day, not at the next holidays.
Lettings are where sites get open
Evening hire is income. It is also how strangers learn which door is soft. Put the hire on a known entrance, with lighting and a camera that shows faces, and lock the rest of the campus. If the alarm is still a single zone for the whole school, one late football match holds the entire building unset. That is how classrooms get walked.
Tie the letting to a schedule. When the booking ends, the door should stop working. If someone is still inside, a door-held or occupancy check is more useful than hoping they signed out.
See the perimeter without filming children in class
CCTV belongs on gates, car parks, bike stores and the elevation an intruder would use, not on every classroom door ‘just in case’. Retention, signage and a named data controller still apply. Pupils in uniform on a public-facing camera need a purpose you can defend.
After hours, the useful picture is the person at the gate that should be shut. A control room can watch that without asking a caretaker to live on their phone. We design that mix on education sites around how the campus is actually used after the bell, not a daytime tour.
A practical checklist
- Can you list who is allowed on site after 6pm, by group, this week?
- Do lettings open only the doors they have paid for?
- Are contractor credentials time-limited and collected?
- Is the alarm zoned so a sports hall hire does not unset the classrooms?
- Do gate and entrance cameras show a face at night?
- When a staff member leaves, how quickly does their access die?
